Yes. There are three ways to have a murder mystery dinner in Johannesburg with Murder Mystery Guide: fly me up from Cape Town to host it, host one of my Print & Play games yourself, or have me write a game for your group and train you to run it. All three work anywhere in Gauteng, from Sandton and Rosebank to Pretoria and the East Rand.
I’m Lisa Aspeling. I’ve been writing and hosting guest-improvised murder mystery dinners since 2010. Nobody reads a script and nobody watches actors. Your guests are the suspects, and a dinner party they’d have forgotten by Monday becomes the one they bring up for years. Here’s how it works when the writer lives 1,400 kilometres away.

What are your options for a murder mystery dinner in Johannesburg?
| I fly up and host | Print & Play | Written for you, hosted by you | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who writes it | Me | Me (ready-made) | Me, for your group |
| Who hosts | Me | You | You, trained by me |
| Lead time | From 6 weeks | Download tonight & send to your local print shop | About 6 weeks |
| What it costs | Quoted per event | R1,099 (+R750 for a training call) | Quoted per game |
Option 1: I fly up and host. I’ll come to Johannesburg to run the evening myself, with a game written for your group or one of my ready-made games. On top of the game, there’s an away-game hosting fee for the days spent travelling, plus flights, accommodation and car hire. You’re not really paying for a plane ticket. You’re paying not to run your own party. A game written for you takes about six weeks. A ready-made game depends on when I’m free.
Option 2: Host a Print & Play game yourself. Download it, print it and play it this weekend. My Print & Play games are guest-improvised too, written for 8 to 30 players, and many began as private commissions. At R1,099, it’s the most direct route from my desk to your dining table. If you’d like me in your corner without the plane ticket, book a one-hour training call and I’ll walk you through your game before the night.
Option 3: I write it, you host it. I write a game around your actual guests, then train you to run it. It’s how clients who can’t fly me in still get a game no one else has played. I’ve done it for a stag weekend in a castle in England, and a UK friends’ getaway in Italy, which is a lot further away than Sandton.

What makes this different from other murder mystery dinners in Johannesburg?
Who does the improvising. Johannesburg has good dinner theatre, where professional actors play the suspects and guests help solve the case. This is the other kind. Your guests are the suspects. Some carry a secret to keep and a secret to reveal, and the accusations, alliances and questionable accents are theirs to invent. In most of my games, even the murderer only finds out when they sit down and read their place card.
Which murder mystery game suits a Johannesburg group?
Start with your headcount, because a game built for 12 won’t stretch to 25.
- 8 to 12 guests: the Braai Day Murder Mystery (8 to 12) or the South African Murder Mystery (12).
- 13 to 17 guests: the Illuminati Murder Mystery (13 to 17), the Tropical Resort Awards Murder Mystery (15 to 17) or the 5-Star Hospital Murder Mystery (17).
- 16 to 21 guests: the Caribbean/Rock Festival Murder Mystery (16 to 20), the Foodie/Recipe Book Launch Murder Mystery (20) or the Secret Society Murder Mystery (21). For an all-male group, the All-Male Medieval Murder Mystery (18 to 21).
- Up to 30 guests: the Royal Gala Murder Mystery (23), the Wedding Murder Mystery (16 to 25) or the Botanical Museum/Egyptian Murder Mystery (21 to 30).
For a Joburg office or a mixed crowd, the Braai Day game is a safe bet. It’s set at a top-secret government summit debating whether to rename Heritage Day, and every South African at the table already has an opinion.
Every game has a little flex built in. The essential characters carry the secrets and need their players there on the night. The extra characters can be added or dropped without the mystery noticing. If you want a night only your group could have had, I’ll write one from scratch. Otherwise, browse all the games.
How does the evening run?
The same way it does in Cape Town. Guests join a WhatsApp group where the invitation arrives in character, along with a short guide to what happens on the night. On the evening, they arrive in their own outfits and spend 30 minutes to an hour over drinks settling into their characters. Then everyone sits down to dinner, the murder is announced, the secrets come out and the accusations start. At the end, the murderer confesses and the room votes for best male character, best female character and best dressed.
The whole evening takes two to three hours. Here’s the full walkthrough of the evening, if you’d like the detail.

Is it worth flying a host up from Cape Town?
It’s worth it when you’d rather play at your own party than run it. A host greets every guest in character, keeps the energy up, knows where the best moments are hidden, and handles the problems you didn’t plan for. One client, after a game in the Nuy Valley in the Western Cape, put the distance problem better than I can:
“Lisa is a fantastic host and wrote an incredible story that had us all fully immersed. We only wish she was in the UK so we could book her every year!” Kushal Chandarana
If your group is relaxed, your budget is tight, or you like running the show, a Print & Play game will serve you well. Everything you need to host it is in the kit.
Where should you host a murder mystery dinner in Johannesburg?
Choose a private room where everyone at one table can hear each other. These evenings run on conversation, so acoustics matter more than chandeliers. The best set-ups have:
- A private dining room for the whole group, so the secrets stay in the room.
- An ante-room or bar next door for arrivals, drinks and in-character photos before dinner.
- Waiters who handle food and drinks, so nobody has to leave the game to fetch the wine.
- Space for a photographer to move around.
I’ve put together a list of Johannesburg venues with private dining rooms that suit a murder mystery dinner.
Does a murder mystery dinner work for a corporate event in Johannesburg?
Yes, especially for a year-end function where you need everyone to take part. Everyone gets a character, so there’s no sideline to stand on, and the secrets are scattered around the room, so people end up talking to colleagues outside their own department. Every game also has extra characters with no secrets, so a last-minute no-show doesn’t break the mystery.
“It’s the type of experience you talk about for months afterwards and it’s always fun to see how different guests bring their personas to life.” Beth Roberts, corporate client
Groups go up to 30. Beyond 24, the venue needs good acoustics or a couple of microphones, or the table splits into side conversations about the N1.
Can you book a murder mystery dinner in Durban?
Yes, the same three ways. I’ll fly to Durban to host on the same terms as Johannesburg, or you can host a Print & Play game yourself, or have me write one for your group and train you to run it. The same goes for anywhere else in South Africa. The murder travels well. I just need a seat on the plane.
Frequently asked questions
Are you based in Johannesburg?
No. Murder Mystery Guide is based in Cape Town. I fly to Johannesburg to host by arrangement, and my Print & Play games can be hosted anywhere in Gauteng without me.
How much does a murder mystery dinner in Johannesburg cost?
A Print & Play game you host yourself costs R1,099, and a one-hour training call with me is R750. If I fly up to host, you pay for the game plus an away-game hosting fee, flights, accommodation and car hire, so I quote each event individually.
How far ahead should I book?
About six weeks for a game written for your group. For a ready-made game that I host, it depends on my availability, so ask early. A Print & Play game can be downloaded tonight.
How many guests can play?
Between 8 and 30, depending on the game.
Do guests need costumes?
Guests put their own outfits together. It’s how they start becoming their character, and it’s half the fun.
Is it an actor-led show?
No. There are no actors. Your guests play the suspects and do the improvising, with me hosting if you fly me up.
Can I host it myself but still get help from you?
Yes. Book a one-hour Host Like a Pro training call and I’ll walk you through your game before the night.
Do you travel anywhere else in South Africa?
Yes, on the same terms as Johannesburg.
